I believe women are miraculous.

Since time began, women have been giving birth and strengthening each other through the experience of bringing life into the world. As a doula, I am honored to be present with mothers in the peak of their beauty and power and to help them as they embark on this exciting transformation. My training through experience in birth and by DONA International and the Academy of Certified Birth Educators makes possible that my passion and skills can be a source of support for laboring women and their families.

I believe women and their bodies know how to create and give passage to life, and that babies know how to be born.

DOULA SERVICES what is a birth doula?A birth doula is a woman with experience in childbirth and is a trained labor support person. She trusts the process of birth and respects the natural ability of a woman to birth her baby. She understands that pregnancy and birth are a sacred journey and can provide comfort and reassurance to a laboring woman in a variety of ways. As a doula I can provide alternative pain relief measures and comfort practices such as breathing, relaxation techniques, movement, and positioning. I am also able to facilitate communication between laboring mothers and their partners with caregivers and can assist in keeping a mother informed about the course of her labor and her options. I feel it is important to be sensitive to the unique and individual experience of each woman. I am present to support a women in labor continuously and without interruption. I am--as are all doulas--hired by women and their partners, not by hospitals, doctors, or other caregivers. description of servicesMy services include two to three prenatal visits with you and your partner. The first visit will allow us to acquaint ourselves with each other and to develop a birth plan and address any questions or concerns you might have about your upcoming birth. At the second visit we can discuss your priorities for pain management and begin to practice some comfort positions and relaxation techniques. If you desire a third visit to continue this preparation or for any other reason, I am available.As soon as you hire me I am available for unlimited support by phone and email. I encourage you to freely contact me with any questions or concerns. My knowledge of resources and information is always here for you. I am delighted to take part in your preparation for labor and delivery!I will be on-call anytime from two weeks before your estimated due date until your baby is born. As soon as labor begins and you call me, I will be continuously present to support you physically, informationally, and emotionally. My intention is to nurture and support you throughout your labor and delivery, and you will have my full attention and encouragement without interruption. I will stay with you until at least two hours after your baby is born to facilitate bonding and help establish breastfeeding and to help provide quiet time for you and your family to get to know each other. I am also available to take pictures or video, if you desire. After your delivery I will call to check in the next day to see how you and your baby are feeling and how breastfeeding is going. You are of course more than welcome to contact me if you have any questions or want clarification about how the labor went. My services also include one postpartum visit at your home to talk about the birth and admire your baby and see how you are adjusting. I am able to recommend postpartum care as well, if needed.

ABOUT ME

about me

A midwestern woman at heart, I was born in Tulsa and spent most of my childhood in northwestern Iowa. After graduating high school, I attended the University of Kansas in Lawrence and earned a bachelor's degree in Sociology and also in Women's, Gender, and Sexuality Studies. While in college I lived in Watkins Scholarship hall with 50 other women and served as their Health Chair for two years and am still active in the preservation and development of the sisterhood I discovered while living there. While studying at the Universidad de Costa Rica in San Jose I acquired conversational Spanish and a more complex understanding of my place in the world. I received training as a sexual assault survivor advocate through the GaDuGi SafeCenter in Lawrence and have further experience in community development of safe spaces through the Emily Taylor Women's Resource center, where I served as assistant director of education and prevention services for one year. I am a trained doula through the Academy of Certified Birth Educators in Olathe, Kansas. I have been working as a doula and continuing certification by means of DONA International. As per my specific interests, I am also continuing education on the Bradley Method and placenta encapsulation.
MY PHILOSOPHY

my philosophy

Birth can be many things. It can be a marathon, a moment of epiphany, the point where values and bodies and lived experience collide. It can be a loving event—one that welcomes a child into its first moments out in the world. It can also be painful, intimidating, and sometimes lonely process. A laboring woman will mother her child into the world with her strength, determination, tenderness, and protection. I am a doula because I believe that a mother needs this kind of nurturing as well while she is focused on opening herself to bring her baby out. There are many ways to give birth. In every choice a woman makes about her body and her child's well-being, she should be supported fully and listened to. She should always have access to information and options and should be supported through labor — not rushed or pressured. I have chosen to engage my values about health and women in my calling as a doula. My role is especially helpful in this time when pregnancy and birth are becoming more medicalized and doctor-focused instead of mother-baby focused. I strongly believe that technology and medicine are important tools that are here to support labor, but not to direct it.
